(Ian kept collecting after the original sale. It was originally sold on the understanding that he would keep the collection in his house until he died, but he stopped collecting in 2016 when DC started renumbering).
Ian himself is a bit non-pluses by this sale, telling us he sold his collection in 2008 to John Barton for a tiny fraction of their value with the intention of being allowed to keep them in my house until I died.
Running from May 2nd to August 19th 2014, Comics Unmasked traces the history of the British comic book and explores how comics and graphic novels have uncompromisingly addressed such subjects as violence, sexuality and drugs, breaking social boundaries with the innovative form that marries literature and visual art.
Arnold Book Company. No date listed, but published in July, 1954. Good (2.0). Wear to spine, with nicks, tears and abrasions to square binding. Nicks and fraying to edges, top corner of front cover clipped, bottom corner soft, 1" piece of tape to inside front cover, tape residue to length of back cover parallel to spine. Off-white pages. Ingels cover. Reprints Haunt of Fear #23 and Shock SuspenStories #14 for the British comics crowd. Contents in black and white. According to EC ace Thommy Burns, this is the scarcest of ABC's three EC reprint books. Uncommon in any grade.
Fueled by the furor over ABC's Haunt of Fear #1, Parliament passed the Children and Young Persons (Harmful Publications) Act in 1955, which led to the disappearance of horror comics from British news agents' shelves. The Act was renewed in 1965, and remains in force. In terms of socio-political influence, this is the single most significant international horror comic ever published.

January 2016: "I commissioned phil-comics to auction my collection of British comics, including Marvel UK, 2000AD and Eagle titles. I was very impressed with the level of service provided, the updates sent during the auctions and the values achieved from the lots. Having previously sold items on EBay, I appreciate the effort and the time required - Phil made the whole process extremely easy. I have no hesitation in recommending Phil Comics to any comic enthusiast interested in selling their collection."
December 2015: "phil-comics auctioned my 1960s collection of around 600 boys' comics at the end of 2014. The whole experience was straightforward, interesting and pleasant. The final total I received (after commission and fees) was much higher than I anticipated. Had I auctioned them myself I am certain I would have had fewer bidders and received much lower prices. The only effort I had to make was one bulk delivery following up by one courier delivery. Everything was handled by phil-comics, including keeping me informed by email throughout the process. I recommend anybody with a comic collection for sale to do as I did, and leave everything to the experts."
"I was delighted with the friendly and professional service I received from phil-comics. Just as when I've bought comics through them in the past, they proved a model of efficiency, honesty and good communications - excellent service combined with low charges. For anyone who wants a hassle-free, fairly-run, profitable and dependable way of selling comics, this is the one to go for."
"Service was first class and prices I got were terrific. I highly recommend phil-comics to anyone who wants to sell items. Phil does all the hard work and keeps you updated on everything throughout the bidding. Thanks again for everything.""phil-comics sold a near complete collection of Victor and Commando Comics on my behalf on eBay over a four month period in 2007. Throughout this time I was kept regularly informed on auction progress and received regular payment cheques with a detailed breakdown of the figures. I have sold a fair number of items myself on eBay and found the phil-comics approach to be thoroughly professional and very friendly. I believe that their high reputation amongst comic buyers boosted the final auction values achieved. I would have no hesitation in recommending their services to others considering selling their comic collections."

As of June 2017 we now have a tiered fee structure which goes some way to reflect the time required to sell items of differing values. We work hard to maximise the price of every item we handle and that means breaking collections down and often listing comics individually, if we feel they will sell for a higher price in this manner.
All items sold by phil-comics auctions are graded strictly and fairly using this guide. The prefix + or - can be used to define a more specific grade; Very Good+ lies between Very Good and Fine, for example. Any writing (inscriptions, puzzles etc) and price clippings are stated separately.
Very Good (VG) Middle of the road, books and comics often appear in this grade having experienced light general wear over the years. Sound overall, displaying light signs of wear which can include creasing, nicks, small tears, light foxing and page tanning.

Simply put, this article is intended to evoke those long buried nostalgic memories of your comic childhood and encourage you dear reader to ask questions, vent, or simply enjoy the history of British comics collecting.
The step into the unknown which resulted in me penning this missive was promulgated by a morning that I spent at the local comic club, which meets once a week in Gateshead, across the river from my home town of Newcastle. The host, Graeme Wilkinson, is a comic retailer, collector, and seller of back issue American comics. I asked Graeme if I could come along and chat about the fantastic history that is British comics and he graciously agreed.
So, armed with some of my best examples of British comic artwork, I turned up at his house to talk about British comics. The majority of the attendees were probably under 35 and consequently lifelong American comic collectors. I have no axe to grind with American comic collectors, I am one myself, I simply wanted to pass on a little knowledge about our own illustrious British comic history. First of all I was little disappointed by how little the attendees even knew about British comics. But in the end some of them, having seen the artwork, could see that the tradition of British comics had indeed produced some very excellent comic materials, so I left the meeting feeling relatively happy about my little show and tell. 2b1af7f3a8
