Originally titled Frontera, this original novella incorporates experiences of two different border towns: El Paso and Brownsville, Texas. Several events occur such as the Mexican Revolution, the influx of unaccompanied alien children ('unaccompanied minors') and the build up of the US border security pact. This is the story of a young immigrant girl between two countries. Set in 1981, it is a teenage thriller that addresses some of the problems faced by young people today as they struggle towards a goal, even when they are lost in a maze of confusion.
This is no ordinary story. In it, a young Mexican girl, named Lisandra, lives in an eight-square bedroom in the Barrio de las Flores in El Paso, Texas. Her two rooms are connected to rooms in her neighbors and Lisandra shares a bathroom with her mother and younger brother. Drained by the poverty of her home, she keeps her eyes open and her mind undimmed. While leaders in El Paso call for rapprochement, she envisions a grander future of her country ruined by bloodshed. Like her great uncle, Felipe, and her grandmother, who preceded her, Lisandra clings to the dream.
